Stephan Phillips Bio

Artist’s Bio

Stephan Phillips was born in 1970 in Rochester New York. He began his studies at Syracuse University and received his BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington. Stephan now lives in Ithaca New York where he is a member of the State of the Art Gallery.

Frank Robinson, the director of the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell University, has described his work as possessing “a quiet integrity and strength” and “an evocative mysteriousness”. Phillips’ work was represented in the 2009 edition of Stone Canoe: A Journal of Arts and Ideas from Upstate New York, published by Syracuse University. In 2009 he also received second place in the Lenore Segan Arts Awards given by the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation. Stephan’s work has been shown at galleries throughout New York State as well as in New York City, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

In the past Stephan’s work was figural and narrative drawn purely from imagination. The subjects were drawn from events in the lives of Christian saints or from Biblical events. His new still life painting continues to search for spiritual experience but looks now to the commonplace world and the universal experience of objects at hand.
