Special Events 2007

PHOTO FORUM -- Wednesday, March 7, 7:00 pm
In this first SOAG Special Event of 2007, three contemporary photographer's will show and speak about their work. The participants include:

  • Laurie Snyder, professor of photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, currently on leave and living in Ithaca through this summer. She specializes in hand made books, cyanotype prints, and traditional photographs. Laurie also works collaboratively with John Wood, a distinguished fellow artist and printmaker.
  • Barry Perlus, Associate Professor of Photography at Cornell University in the Art Department. In addition to visual projects based in Ithaca, New York, Barry has completed work in India and Nepal. His work has been exhibited nationally and abroad in group and solo exhibitions and is in numerous public and private collections.
  • Kent Loeffler. Kent currently runs the Cornell Plant Pathology Photo Lab and has also maintained an interest in fine art photography alongside his professional career as a scientific photographer. Loeffler shows his work regionally in upstate New York, most recently participating in the Everson Biennial (2000) at the Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY.

Art Criticism -- How Does It Affect Artists and Their Art?
7:00-9:00 pm, Wednesday, September 19 at the gallery.
Reviewers and artists discuss the purpose of critical reviews of visual art shows and the role of the critic/reviewer. Noted panel participants:

  • Jesse Bennett, jazz musician, music teacher and saxophonist in several local groups. Jesse spent his early career performing and teaching in Germany and Europe.
  • Nancy Hasty, actress, playwright, and acting teache. She is a former resident of New York City, where one of her plays was produced on Broadway. She now lives in Scranton, Pa.
  • Deborah Jones, sculptor and lecturer in art history at Tompkins Cortland Community College with a special interest in women and minorities in the arts. She is one of the founding members of the Greater Ithaca Art Trail.
  • Frank Robinson, director of the Johnson Museum of Art on the Cornell University campus. He is a man keenly aware of the role the art museum plays in the careers of visual artists and an enthusiastic supporter of local artists.
  • Wylie Schwartz, visual art critic and art historian with a particular interest in the "new" and having a balanced perspective toward art criticism.
  • Ben Sherman, sculptor and member of the State of the Art Gallery. Ben is the evening's moderator.

GETTING IN THE DOOR -- Issues of pesenting artwork for acceptance by galleries, museums and alternatives

7:00-9:00 pm, Wednesday, November 7
The people who make the decisions discuss the process by which artists are considered for exhibition in their galleries and what they look for when considering artists.
