class="mailingstyle">Paintings of urban life, trees, explorations of
color and texture, and collages of gods and goddesses that personify
the planets will fill the front gallery during November at the State of
the Art Gallery. The work is by four new gallery members -- painters
Leslie Brill, Erica Pollock and Ethel Vrana, and collagist Andrea King.
The four artists will be present at a reception for their exhibition
Friday, November 7 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at the gallery.</span></p>
<p> <span class="mailingstyle"><strong>Leslie Brill </strong>offers
the viewer an intimate experience with trees, color, and paint. Her
paintings range from the symbolic to a kind of unique arboreal
portraiture. Her emphasis favors the trees -- not in a detailed,
botanical sense, but in the organic handling of oil paint and what is
either included or excluded in her compositions. </span></p>
<span class="mailingstyle"><strong></strong></span>
<p><span class="mailingstyle"><strong>Andrea King</strong> is
exhibiting a series of the Nine Planets in our Solar System, ignoring,
she says, Pluto's recent demotion. These pieces are in the medium of
paper collage and are personifications of the planets imagined as the
gods and goddesses after which they are named. </span></p>
<span class="mailingstyle"><strong></strong></span>
<p class="mailingstyle">The paintings of <strong>Erica
Pollock's</strong> current series present a cropped viewpoint of the
urban world.
"By cropping the scene," she says," I am honing the viewer into a piece
of the scene often overlooked or ignored. In this series, the recurring
imagery seen over and over again is people, shadows and streets."</p>
<p><span class="mailingstyle"><strong>Ethel Vrana</strong>
calls her new works abstract expressions. "They represent," she says,
"an exploration into ways in which my interest in the processes and
cycles of nature can be abstracted and expressed through texture, color
and form as well as new ways of applying paint."</span></p>
<p><span class="mailingstyle"> This exhibition opens Wednesday,
November 5, and runs through Sunday, November 30. In addition, other
members of the State of the Art Gallery will exhibit paintings, prints,
photographs, sculpture, and assemblage in the Members' Gallery.</span><br>
