Mary Schuler

I want my paintings to “sing” with energy and intensity.   I rely on color and stroke to do this and am most free wheeling when using the palette knife.    I am making the transition from impressionistic to a more abstract form of art, and from oil to acrylic paints.   I began painting faithful descriptions of  what I see, but now take artistic license.  I am very responsive to the beauty in nature and love to paint the land and skies of  the Fingerlakes area where I live.  I take many photographs, work on several canvases at a time, and prefer large sizes where I am freer to expand what I see and feel.  I use small plein-air studies to create larger more abstract paintings in my studio, and take enormous pleasure and inspiration from my travels.   Capturing these observations and emotions on canvas using my affinity for color, bold strokes and paint texture is my happiest time.
