Janice Levy

Janice Levy is associate professor in the cinema and photography department in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College where she has taught photography since 1987. She chaired the department from 1998 until 2004.

She holds an MFA in photography from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus, and a B.A. in psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.

An acclaimed photographer, her work has been exhibited internationally and has been published widely in textbooks and magazines. While working as a freelance commercial/ industrial photographer clients included: American Express, TIME magazine, the Chronicle of Higher Education and London Records. Among the galleries and museums to show her work are: the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, the Spectrum Gallery, CEPA Gallery, the Silver Eye Gallery, Mary Washington Galleries, and the American Culture Center in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Levy is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Light Work Grant, and numerous Ithaca College faculty development support grants. She is a 1992 recipient of the prestigious National Kellogg Fellowship Award. Under the auspices of this three-year fellowship, Levy traveled extensively. She developed a relationship with the island nation of Madagascar that has resulted in six extended visits and two significant bodies of work. She continues to travel and photograph, constantly exploring.
