Terry Plater, Leslie Brill, Stan Bowman, and Gurdon Brewster have artwork in th ‘Made in NY 2012′ exhibition at the Schweinfurth Memorial Center Genessee Street, Auburn, NY.  The show runs through May 20.

David Watkins, Jr. has a solo exhibition at the Corner’s Gallery 409 East Upland Road, Ithaca, NY. The show, ‘Nature Blurred at the Edges’, will run from May 4 through June, with  a reception for the artist Friday, May 11, 5:30-7:30pm.

Carol Ast, Diane Newton and Marian Van Soest are exhibiting artwork in “Perspectives on Homelessness and the Indigent” at the Tompkins County Public Library March thru May 2012, in Ithaca NY.

Yvonne Piburn has artwork on exhibit at the Titus Gallery Spring Show, Titus Gallery East State Street, Ithaca, NY through May.

State of the Art will host its first Members’ Show of 2012 during May.  The show will include paintings, watercolors, drawings, collage, photographs, prints, sculpture and other three-dimensional work by the gallery’s artists. A reception for the artists will be held Friday, May 4 from 5-8pm. Show dates are Thursday May 3 through Sunday, May 27, 2012.

“On the Leading Edge,” a two-person show of work by artists Jan Kather and Stan Bowman will open at State of the Art April 4 and run through April 29, 2012.  A reception for the artists will be held at the gallery Friday, April 6, Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca, from 5-8pm with a cider tasting hosted by Bellwether Hard Cider of Trumansburg.

Spanning the gamut from traditional silver prints to incorporating digital video as a sculptural element, Kather will be ”testing the waters” with abstract photographic imagery and sound in this installation. Bowman, although a long time photographer, is exploring new technology in the form of iPad images. These are abstract images created and drawn by hand on the iPad, augmented with a variety of iPad apps.

Watercolors will fill the main gallery at State of the Art in February. This show features the work of gallery member Margy Nelson and guest artist Shirley Hogg. Margy says she has been communing with the Elemental spirits of Earth, Air, Fire and Water to capture their voices on paper and Shirley has been invoking the voices of the underworld, the animal Shamans who protect their earthly creatures. There will be an opening reception for the artists on Gallery Night, Friday, Feb. 3 from 5-8pm with a wine tasting co-hosted by Knapp Winery and Glenora Wine Cellars. Show dates are Feb. 1 through 26, 2012.

The Salon at the gallery will feature work by other gallery artists: paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, and collage.The gallery is located at 120 W. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

• Each entrant may submit up to two (2) works.

• All work should be reasonably current and original.

• If accepted into the show, the work must be delivered ready to hang (matted, framed with glass or plexiglass in front and with a wire or suitable hardware for hanging in the back).

• A photographic process must have been used in the production of the work. (Scanned work is acceptable, digital art that did not originate from a photographic process-is not).

• The work should not have been submitted to SOAG in the past.

• Current SOAG members and their immediate families are not eligible to exhibit in this show.

• The Entry Fee of $35.00 is non-refundable and does not guarantee that your work will be accepted into the show.

• Images of up to two (2) works can be submitted.  They must be jpegs at 300 dpi, between 800 and 1200 pixels on the long side and labeled with the artist’s name, followed by the image number 01 or 02. (example: d.watkins01.jpg, d.watkins02.jpg)

• An image list (Filename, Title, Size, Medium, Price) must also be submitted with all entries.

• If submitting by e-mail is problematic, please send a CD with your fee and all information as outlined above.  CD’s cannot be returned. Do not send prints.

ACCEPTED WORK: Deadline and Notifications

All entries must be received by 5pm Friday, February 10, 2012 and will be jury-reviewed by Friday, February 17, 2012.  E-mail notification of results will be sent Feb. 18-20, 2012.

The exhibit will be curated by members of the gallery. After installation a Judge from outside      the gallery will determine prizes and how the prize money will be distributed.  Winners may be notified privately prior to the opening reception so that they may plan to attend the award ceremony.  The awards will be presented at 6:30pm during the opening reception Friday, March 2^nd 2012.

DELIVERY of ACCEPTED WORK to THE GALERY

The work, ready for hanging, must be delivered to the gallery in person or by a designated substitute on:

Sunday, February 26 between noon and 5 pm; or

Monday, February 27 between 1 and 5pm.

• Work cannot be accepted after 5pm Monday as installation of the show begins at that time.

• NO SHIPPING OR MAILING.

• The gallery retains the right to deny access to the show if the images delivered are substantially different from those submitted to the jury.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Submissions to the SOAG 23^rd Annual Juried Photography Show shall imply an agreement on the part of the artists to all conditions of this prospectus. Permission for SOAG to photograph accepted works for publicity, education, and reference purposes is assumed.

SALES

Sale of the work is encouraged. Work will be offered for sale with the understanding that there is a 30% commission for each sale. Artists will be responsible for reporting and paying the sales tax. Sold artwork remains in the exhibit for the duration of the show.

INSURANCE

While the State of the Art Gallery, its members and agents will make every effort to protect your work, we cannot indemnify you against loss or damage to your work. In submitting to the show you agree that the State of the Art Gallery is not liable and must be held harmless if your work is damaged or lost.

PHOTO SHOW FAQ

“Immigration and Biography” will be the first show of 2012 at State of the Art Gallery and it will feature the work of the gallery’s two newest members, Jane Dennis and Terry Plater.  The title reflects both Dennis’s focus on immigration and Plater’s focus on portraiture and other subject matter that has narrative power.  Dennis will show mixed media sculpture and Plater, a painter, will show portraits and landscapes.

Gurdon Brewster’s show features a larger than life size bronze sculpture of Miriam, the prophet and sister of Moses, who is dancing with a tambourine. Six other new sculptures will be shown in the show along with sculptures made in the recent past. A number of these sculptures reflect human struggle for liberation and a number celebrate life in the form of dance. Through his sculptures he has confronted the pain of war, felt the exuberance of dancing and been moved by the mysterious power of the sacred. He has been working in sculpture since high school and now, retired, he finds that he is only gaining in his creative energy. He likes to say that he leans on the gift of the muse, the gift of Spirit energy, and the gift of the creativity of the angels. He is inspired, uplifted and transformed by his sculpture.

Gurdon Brewster will give a talk entitled, “Miriam and the Feminine Image”, on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3 pm at SOAG.  

He will show a video of the casting process of transforming the clay figure into the bronze figure, on Friday, Nov. 18, 7-8:30 pm at SOAG.
